Understanding the Types and Works of TIG Torches

It is easy to get overwhelmed with so many varieties of TIG torch sorts and sizes. The perfect TIG torch for your job will make it simpler for you, and the wrong torch can make welding more challenging and tedious. If you are looking for a Victor cutting torch in UAE, then this is for you. But before that, read about the main distinctions between TIG torches and the types of work they are intended for will be emphasized in this guide.

TIG Torches: Air-Cooled vs. Water-Cooled

The most widely used and lowest-duty cycle TIG torches are air-cooled. These torches are cooled by ambient air and internal shielding gas flow, so if they overheat, you need to wait before they cool down.

Water flows through intake and output tubes in water-cooled TIG torches to continually dissipate heat. These torches are capable of handling significantly greater amperages and have considerably longer duty cycles.

The duty cycle amperage rating on each TIG torch specifies how long the torch can weld continuously before it needs to cool down. This rating is given as a percentage of a 10-minute period. For instance, a torch operating at 130A with a 35% duty cycle can weld for 3.5 minutes at 135A until cooling for the last 6.5 minutes.

TIG Torch Sizes

Commonly used air-cooled TIG torch sizes are:

•    Size 9 - capable of about 125A
•    Size 17 - capable of about 150A
•    Size 26 - capable of about 200A

Commonly used water-cooled TIG torch sizes are:

•    Size 20 - size 9 equivalent, capable of about 250A
•    Size 18 - size 17 equivalent, capable of about 350A

The actual amperage capacity may differ depending on the manufacturer, the external temperature, the welding position, how much heat the welded material radiates, and other factors.

It is not possible to mix and match consumables between various TIG torch sizes. Each torch size has corresponding size consumables, even though torches require the same consumable types (collet body or gas lens).

You can do most TIG welding tasks using the size 17 torch, which is the most popular size and is sold with portable inverter-based TIG welders. The size 9's modest profile makes it an ideal option for navigating tight spaces. On the other hand, the larger size 26 is designed for welding thick materials but is also more likely to result in hand fatigue because of the extra weight.

Despite being larger than most others in terms of amperage ratings, Unimig T2 Torchology torches are similar to size 17. They can manage 190A as opposed to 150A. Furthermore, their distinctive consumables have a 20X longer lifespan. With duty cycles up to 35% at 240A, their water-cooled counterparts are considerably more powerful.

Flex-head Vs. Rigid-head Torch Design

Each type of TIG torch mentioned above is available with rigid-head or flexible-head design. Flex-head torch is a better option as you can change the torch's head shape easily. As a result, it is possible to weld difficult places such as tight corners. Furthermore, if you adjust the torch to your welding style, welding becomes much easier.

Flex-head choices that are similar to the Unimig torches we've covered above include the Tigmaster Kemppi Superflex 150 and the Tigmaster Kemppi 3 Piece TIG torch.

You will require a TIG torch with a gas valve if your TIG welder does not have a specialized shielding gas inlet valve for TIG welding.

To connect to the gas regulator of your shielding gas cylinder, a separate gas line is provided for valved TIG torches. As a result, as soon as you open the torch's valve, the gas is discharged through the torch into the welded connection.
